As part of the shift to make vehicles lighter and more efficient – mainly driven by the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations passed on automakers – the use of aluminum in engines, frames and even body panels is growing with each new model year. Aluminum offers auto makers a thinner, lighter material that still preserves structural strength and integrity and helps make the vehicle more fuel efficient. As more of these vehicles hit the road, the ability for auto body repair shops and collision centers to perform repairs on aluminum auto parts becomes citical. Ralle Collision Center saw this need and ensured that our auto body technicians possessed expertise in aluminum welding techniques.
The challenges of aluminum welding differ from traditional steel welding in several respects, most commonly, warping, distortion and burn-through. Aluminum’s heat dissipating properties causes the weld area to cool, requiring more energy to heat the weld. However, aluminum has a lower melting point than steel, and because it is typically thinner, using excessive heat or applying heat for too long can easily warp the aluminum part or worse, cause the weld to burn completely through, ruining the part. Therefore, controlling the heat during the aluminum welding process is a highly-developed skill that must be mastered in order to effectively repair these parts. Rallye Collision Center is proud that we are an Aluminum Welding Certified Collision Center with technicians who have been trained in these methods and are fully-qualified to handle your new generation automobile repairs.
Together with enhanced skills, aluminum welding certification requires modern equipment that can properly handle the stringent conditions our technicians are faced with.
